Chapter

Twenty-Three

SKYE

A few days after my mother blew my mind and my heart realized it was broken for good, my door opens again and Damian walks in. I blink hard in surprise, but he raises his hands like he’s surrendering and stops just inside the door.

I haven’t seen him since I’ve been here, but I also haven’t really left my room. He smiles, though it’s not as cold as it usually is when it’s aimed at me. “Am I interrupting?”

I motion to the textbook open on my lap. “Just trying to catch up.”

He nods. “May I come in for a minute?”

“It’s your house,” I say as I snap the textbook shut, on edge with him so close and without anyone else nearby. Sweat dots on my palms, but I swipe them discreetly against my pajama pants under the comforter and try to keep my tone light.

“It may be my house, but this is your space in it.” Nevertheless, he strides in and settles in the armchair by the window, glancing out of it before he flicks a hand toward the outside. “My son and his friends are going to storm the castle if I don’t let them see you soon.”

My body stiffens. “If I’m causing you any trouble by–”

He waves me off, smiling kindly as he turns his gaze back to me. “It’s no trouble. Simply the truth. I thought you might like to know.”

“Why?” It’s not like you’re in the business of telling me the goddamn truth.

Damian’s blue eyes are so like Dylan’s that for just a moment, I see him in his father. Inside, they’re nothing alike, but on the outside? It’s like I’m looking at the man I love twenty or so years down the line. Damian’s hair has a little more silver in it now than it did even last year when I met him, but his features are also more relaxed, allowing me to see even more similarities between him and Dylan than I care to. At first glance, they’re all sharp edges and cool, collected aloofness, but with Damian’s expression smooth and open for once, he doesn’t bring that same sense of fear and trepidation over me he usually does.

It’s probably a false sense of security. Possibly because I want to believe that some of the goodness and love that lives in his son lives in him as well–for my mother’s sake–but I wouldn’t go so far as to say that I can see any of that in him right now.

As his gaze holds mine, he frowns. “Why am I telling you the truth? Simply because it’s the truth, Skye, and like I said, I thought you might like to know that they haven’t given up on you.”

“Yeah, but why?” I ask, lifting my chin slightly in an attempt to look at least a little bit more formidable than a college girl wasting away in a fucking hospital bed. “Wouldn’t it be better for you if I thought they had given up?”

He lets out a long breath.
